You have reached www.scummbox.org
This is a personal website being run out of a house in downtown Toronto on a VM in Denver.
It serves a variety of purposes, including: shell access, web hosting and (hopefully) soon now e-mail.
I create accounts for my friends mainly, so don't bother asking for a shell (unless I know you).
A brief history of scummbox.org
scummbox.org came to be about eight years ago. All my tinkering with Linux (specifically Mandrake Linux) came hto fruition with the first incarnation of Scummbox: No web, but shell, file and e-mail. Since then, a major move has happened, web services added and e-mail broken (D'oh!) UPDATE (June 2, 2005) e-mail service has been restored!. More Updates! Due to the install of Mandrake 9.2 going totally flaky on me (finally resulting in a complete loss of RPM and URPMI) I decided to blow away the system (after backing up data, natch) and completely reformatting/reinstalling an OS. Since late 2005 Scummbox has been running on an old Celeron 333 with 98 mb of RAM with FreeBSD 5.4 as it's OS. Now (June 2009) I decided a hardware refresh and OS upgrade is in order. Scummbox is now an AMD Athalon X2 2.8ghz with 2 gb of RAM running Gentoo Linux. Now, in 2010, Scummbox's web functions have been moved to a VM that a friend is kindly providing, and instead of Apache it's using Nginx. I've also offloaded mail to Gmail's hosted service.
Here is a picture of my Brother's Sharp Zaurus SSHing into Scummbox!
Oh, and the SCUMM in Scummbox is from a specific series of PC Adventure games from the ninties. Lucasarts Games used the SCUMM engine to script their first adventure game, Maniac Mansion. SCUMM is an acronym for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. It was later featured in one of my all-time favorite PC games, Sam and Max Hit the Road. My love of these games was so great, that I worked the acronym into my internet moniker Scumm_Boy. As a side note, if you have access to any of these great Lucasarts games and run a modern Operating System (Windows XP/2000, Linux/BSD with Xwindows, Mac OSX, etc), get ScummVM (Who I stole the Favicon from... sorry!) and have fun!
So as you can see, I'm a giant nerd.
Hosted stuff
Currently, things I host consist mainly of my blog and a couple of sites hosted for friends. There might be more in the future. People with blogs can log in to edit them on their blog mainpage. People that have had email created for scummbox can check their mail here
That's about it for the front page!
Scummbox has been up 91 days, nice!
